Technology Selection
Purpose
Technical options selections are typically carried out using a combination of a basic point rating system and price. Typically evaluation will be carried out against a matrix of required features (mandatory and optional) using spreadsheets for scoring purposes. While this approach delivers basic functionality the underlying process may be opaque, and understanding and buy-in by the selection panel could be limited as a result. The Cogentus approach uses a combination of workshop sessions and integrated software producing highly visual outputs. The selection team can really understand the relative merits of the options, can carry out what-if analysis, adopt different stakeholder views and thereby achieve a high degree of buy-in to the resulting decision.
Benefits
- The method represents both quantifiable and unquantifiable benefits of the solutions.
- The efficient use of the Cogentus framework and underlying methodology reduces the decision-making cycle time.
- Individual bias and preferences are excluded from the process.
- Enables the selection team to avoid typical group decision making issues such as lack of focus, participation and ownership of the resulting decision.
Our Approach
- Ensure a clear definition of each technical option is established.
- Define criteria and measurement scales for each option, typical examples of these are:
- Technical
- Financial
- Operability/Maintainability
- Safety
- Environmental
- The criteria are scored by the Selection Group.
- The Cogentus system is used to rank the technical options by order of preference.
- Conduct what-if analysis, sensitivity analysis and view alternative stakeholder perspectives.
- Make group selection decision.
